“Design is not about making things look pretty or creating bright shiny objects. Design — particularly in health care — is about ease of use, efficiency, and an improved user experience for both clinician and patient.”

In one of the first doctor appointments I ever had, the doctor said, “This healing process is going to be a lot more like Design Thinking than Engineering.”

What I have come to intuitively explore, formally study, and accidentally learn is how the core principles of design thinking and creativity directly apply to complex health challenges and healing, whether the “healing” is of a patient’s system or the healthcare system.

The design for health series is about intersection.

It is a weaving of ideas from designers, design thinkers, medical and public professionals, patients, and creatives. A thought tapestry of overlapping threads that enhance each other.

“We don’t talk about creativity enough—the need for it, and the power that creativity can play in health care. We face some of the most complex challenges on the planet…I get tired of artists, musicians and others talking about the value of creativity in their work…why don’t we do that in medicine and healthcare?”
